( 1.25 pts) The Effects of Social Media on English All languages change over time, including English. In the past, the spread of arts, culture and business shared and developed new English words and phrases all over the world, so the language changed slowly over time. Nowadays, the English language is changing even faster. Social media has lots of trends that quickly spread and change how people communicate. One of the biggest effects of social media made is with the rise in informal language. People today use shorter sentences, casual phrases and a lot of new vocabulary online. People often shorten words (for instance, saying “totes” instead of “totally”), or use text speech such as “LOL” (laugh out loud) or “BRB” (be right back) are common, too. People also use emojis – pictures originally created out of punctuation marks – to show emotion. They use them to replace words or add to the meaning of their social media posts. Some argue the effects of these changes are not good for the English language. They say that grammar is becoming less important and spelling mistakes are becoming more frequent. Others believe that these changes allow for more imagination in communication. Whether good or bad, there’s no doubt that social media is having a large effect on how we use the English language.
